Cold and Flu: Natural Remedies

As of February 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that influenza activity has increased again. All U.S. states but Hawaii and Oregon (let's take a moment of Gratitude, local clients!) continue to report widespread flu activity, and the number of states experiencing high influenza-like illness activity increased from 39 states plus New York City and Puerto Rico, to 42 states plus New York City and the District of Columbia. As most of us are aware by now, this is the most severe flu season in recent years; and flu activity is predicted to stay elevated for several more weeks. Since I'm a huge fan of using natural treatments whenever possible, I've included a few basic home remedies for treating cold and flu that you're likely to already have around the house.

Garlic is an antibiotic, antifungal, and antibacterial, and so can expedite one's recovery from almost any illness. Finely mince 1-2 cloves, and drink it quickly in water. Cinnamon is another effective antiviral and antibiotic that can relieve cough, congestion, and fever. Take 1 tbsp. in hot tea. Hot tea is also a healer itself — not only does it simply feel good to drink it when you're sick, but its heat helps boost the immune system.

A dropperful of 3% diluted hydrogen peroxide in the ear (the kind we all have in a brown bottle under the bathroom sink) is useful at the first sign of sinus or ear infection.

This Wellness Mama article includes more information on basic natural ways to prevent cold and flu in the first place, homemade herbal remedies and vitamins for treating cold and flu, and natural DIY cold and cough medicines (which the author, Katie, reports she has

personally found to work better than Tylenol or cough syrups).
